“My Journey as a Community Investment Volunteer”

As someone deeply committed to community service, my journey as a member of the volunteer Community Investment Team (CIT) for United Way Waterloo Region Communities (WRC), has been incredibly enriching. Having previously served communities in India, I found a renewed sense of purpose in this role. United Way WRC’s mission to end poverty and support marginalized communities through targeted investments resonates strongly with me, aligning perfectly with my own values and aspirations.

United Way WRC is dedicated to improving lives and building a strong, vibrant community. By focusing on key areas such as poverty reduction, mental health, and community development, United Way WRC collaborates with local agencies and partners to address systemic issues and create lasting change. Their approach involves assessing community needs, investing in effective programs, and mobilizing resources to support those in need. The CIT team at United Way WRC plays a pivotal role in this mission. They are responsible for reviewing grant applications, assessing their potential impact, and making funding recommendations.

The onboarding process was smooth and thorough, with the CIT team providing virtual training sessions and comprehensive supporting documents. This preparation was invaluable, equipping me with the knowledge and tools needed to evaluate applications effectively. The CIT team’s responsiveness and support throughout the process further reinforced my confidence in undertaking this critical task.

Reviewing applications allowed me to gain profound insights into the diverse challenges faced by our local communities. Each application told a unique story of resilience and innovation, aiming to address pressing issues such as social isolation, mental health, and cultural integration. One of the most prevalent themes across the applications was the issue of social isolation, particularly among vulnerable populations such as seniors, refugees, and newcomers. The impact stories shared were deeply moving, illustrating how art can facilitate healing and a sense of belonging among young participants.

An application from a local mental health network focused on providing holistic supports, combining traditional therapeutic practices with innovative wellness programs. A particularly touching story was shared about a young woman who overcame severe anxiety through their support, highlighting the profound impact of accessible mental health services. Mental health emerged as a critical concern and theme across several applications, highlighting the need for culturally sensitive and accessible mental health services.

Another significant issue addressed by the applications was poverty and the need for economic empowerment. One application was requesting funding for a program which focuses on pre-employment programming for women who face chronic unemployment or underemployment. Their programs aimed at reskilling and upskilling women in in-demand industries such as high tech, data science, and skilled trades are crucial in bridging the employment gap and providing economic stability.

Several applications emphasized the need for programs that support cultural integration and provide services tailored to the unique needs of newcomers. One applicationhighlighted their efforts in offering navigation support for systems such as housing and government benefits. This kind of targeted support is essential for helping newcomers settle into their new environment and accessing the resources they need to thrive.

Gender-based violence (GBV) and the need for support services were also prominent issues. The application from an organization focused on serving the Indigenous community,  described how their programs offered culturally relevant support to Indigenous people, addressing the historical trauma and ongoing impact of residential schools. Their approach to incorporating traditional healing practices and creating safe spaces for survivors of GBV was both impactful and necessary.

The CIT review process involved an assessment of each application’s budget, credibility, and potential impact. This rigorous evaluation ensured that the allocated funds would be utilized effectively to create meaningful change. After completing the review process, United Way WRC hosted a review meeting where the larger team and other reviewers came together to discuss our findings. This collaborative session provided an opportunity to share insights, reflect on the quality of applications, and offer feedback on the review process.

My experience as a CIT volunteer for United Way WRC has been incredibly rewarding. It has broadened my understanding of community challenges and highlighted the importance of targeted support and collaboration. The support from the CIT team, coupled with the inspiring stories from community organizations, has left a lasting impact on me. I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing my journey in making a positive difference in our community.
